The Joy of Travel: Toby Huntington-Whiteley talks South Africa, the Amalfi Coast and not setting the alarm

What does travel mean to you?

The biggest joy I get from travel is experiencing new cultures and the feeling of freedom. Travel is important to me as I think it broadens the mind and helps you see the world from different points of view. It also helps with putting things in perspective, making anything I might be worrying about seem smaller and less significant.

What are you most looking forward to about travelling in 2021?

Like a lot of people, I had to cancel a trip last year—I had a safari holiday booked in South Africa with my girlfriend, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can re-book it and we can get there this time around.Kruger National Park, South Africa

Describe a moment, that you only experience when travelling, that you can’t wait to experience again?

This has to be the first night, getting into bed with that feeling of clean sheets and falling asleep not having to set an alarm.

Which European destination is first on your list and why?

I haven’t thought about this as much as usual, as we still don’t know when and where we’ll be able travel yet but I love Italy and didn’t make it last year so I’ll definitely be trying to escape there in 2021—hopefully to the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi Coast, Italy

Which long haul destination are you longing to explore and why?

The Taj Mahal, India

I was having a conversation with a friend recently who went to India a few years ago. It’s a destination that has always appealed to me, but I haven’t ever been, so talking to him has now put India firmly on my list—I’m so curious to explore it, it looks like such a fascinating, varied country.

Name a place that you love so much, you’d happily return to time and time again.

Any Greek island in the summer. There’s something so special about the Greek islands—eating fresh octopus at lunch with a glass of rosé after enjoying the beach all morning. I daydream about it all year round! Last year I went to Paros for the first time and loved it. Greece
